In our modern society, overweight or obesity is now a very common issue universally. Almost every people wants to lose weight and become a fit person. Some people can achieve this goal while others cannot.
As a dietitian, when I meet people in person or via social media, most of them want to know how they can lose their weight quickly. So many people give some valuable advice or suggest some products, which helps to lose weight quickly. Now, the question is, still why the huge number of people are not able to lose their weight successfully?
In this blog, I will mention some possible reasons for failing to lose weight. I hope, through the blog you can identify your possible reasons, which will help to rectify your mistakes and become a healthy person.

1. Mental preparation:
When we start to do something new, we need to prepare both physically and mentally. Most of the people with overweight or obesity, try to lose weight forcefully. However, they do not control themselves in front of tasty or delicious food. This is the biggest mistake committed by most people.
Now, you may ask that, is it wrong if anyone wants to try some tasty or delicious foods occasionally. The answer is `no’, but you need to remember the word `occasionally’. When you are on a diet, you can go restaurants once or twice in a month but before and after that you need to balance your diet plan.
2. Unrealistic expectations:
Most of the time, people trying to lose their weight are motivated by public figures or sportsperson. It is appreciable but one thing most people fail to follow is their hard work. If you want to lose weight properly and maintain it, you need to maintain proper diet and exercise. The short-term policy helps to lose weight temporarily but it’s not a permanent solution.
If you want to maintain your body weight then you need to have a clear idea about your Ideal Body Weight (IBW), what types of food you need to consume, how many calories you can consume regularly and what types of physical activities you need to perform.
3. Continuous eating habits:
This is a very popular reason for overweight or obesity. So many people have a habit of continuous eating some unhealthy foods like chips, chanachur, french fries, etc. Especially when they are sitting alone, watching television, or reading books, their mouth is also continuously working.
If you are trying to lose your weight then you need to leave this habit. You need to replace these types of unhealthy foods with healthy foods like fruits, sprouted mug dal, Chola, etc. You can also carry fennel seeds or ajwain, which helps to control your continuous eating habits.
4. Poor dietary habits:
Poor dietary habits are also the cause of obesity. Choosing wrong food items, skipping meals or fasting for a long time, inadequate water intake or lack of physical activities are also the reasons for obesity.
Fasting may help to reduce weight but if continued regularly, it may cause other health issues like gas formation, low blood sugar level, low blood pressure, headache, etc. Therefore, it is advisable to take healthy foods in a small amount, over 2-2.5 hour intervals.
Some studies show that an adequate amount of water intake also helps to reduce weight. Water also helps to hydrate our body, maintain fluid balance and helps to remove wastage from our body. At least 8-10 glass of water must be consumed daily.
Choosing healthy food items is very important to lose weight properly. Sometimes people may not choose proper foods for their health due to lack of professional advice. It is better to take some advice from experts who can counsel you properly.
5. Choose the wrong diet plan:
Many people are there who want to lose weight very quickly. Therefore, they choose different types of diet plans like the ketogenic diet, crash diet, paleo diet, etc. However, most of the time, they may not able to continue because of high expenses or it may not suitable for their health also.
It is always advisable to follow a diet that is flexible, easily available, depends on your physical status and according to your budget. When you plan to maintain good health, you need to follow a SUSTAINABLE DIET.
6. Health issues and medicinal effects:
People with Poly-cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), hypothyroidism or even on some prescribed medicines (for eg. hormonal medicines), may have a chance of becoming obese. They need to put more effort than normal people do. If you think that you are gaining weight for some health issues or due to the effect of medicines, consult your physician.
These are some possible reasons, which create obstacles in your path of weight loss. You need to find out your reasons and rectify it. Different people have different diet requirements according to their age, sex, and physical condition. So it is recommended to take advice from experts who can help and guide you properly.
